The Union Cabinet has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro project, specifically Lines 4 and 4A, which will significantly enhance urban connectivity across the city. These two new corridors span a total of 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, linking key IT hubs, commercial centers, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods from areas like Kharadi IT Park and Hadapsar’s industrial hub to Warje and Khadakwasla’s tourist belt.
The project aims to provide faster, more comfortable, safer, and greener public transport options, reducing congestion on some of Pune’s busiest roads such as Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, and Sinhagad Road.Lines 4 and 4A will function as vital connectors in Pune’s expanding metro network, integrating seamlessly with existing and planned corridors including Line 1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line 3 (Hinjewadi–District Court) at important interchange stations like the District Court and Hadapsar Railway Station.
This integration will enable smooth multimodal travel across metro, rail, and bus systems, enhancing the overall public transport ecosystem. The project is estimated to be completed within five years at a cost of nearly Rs 9,858 crore, jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and international funding agencies. The expected ridership for these lines is projected to grow from around 4.09 lakh passengers daily by 2028 to over 11.7 lakh by 2058, marking a transformative impact on daily commuting in Pune.
This expansion is a key part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan aimed at accommodating the city’s growth as a major center of innovation and economic activity while promoting sustainable urban mobility.
With this development,
Pune Metro’s network will surpass 100 km, reinforcing the city's commitment to modern, integrated public transit.
The approved Phase-2 of Pune Metro with Lines 4 and 4A promises to deliver faster, safer, and more eco-friendly travel options, easing traffic woes and supporting Pune’s continued growth as an important urban and technological hub
